What is Latch On Memphis?
Latch On Memphis grew out of a global event that brings communities together to support and encourage breastfeeding. It is a record attempt where Memphis moms meet at 10:30am local time to feed breastmilk to their babies, thus setting the record of most moms feeding breastmilk at the same time. Moms who nurse at the breast or pump breastmilk or use donor milk are all welcome and encouraged to attend!
Why Latch On in Memphis?
Statistics show that Shelby County breast feeding rates are very low. Only 30% of mothers are still nursing their infants by six months, and only 11% at a year. The World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend breast feeding exclusively for at least the first six months of life. Furthermore, the World Health Organization recommends that mothers continue nursing for at least two years, and then as long as the mother and child wish. Memphis is also on top of the list for highest infant mortality and childhood obesity. Breastfeeding is shown to improve both childhood obesity and infant mortality rates significantly.
